Mrs motivation on… Why getting into shape starts between your ears

Getting your brain into gear is vital if you’re going to meet your fitness goals. So here are a few simple ways to ‘think yourself’ around some common barriers.

‘I have no willpower’

Unfortunately, no one else can give you the will to exercise; you have to dig deep inside yourself and find it. If you’re struggling to get motivated, try something radical – like signing up for kick-boxing classes or getting sponsored for a 5k run. And remember, what’s challenging for one can often be great fun with two – so why not team up with a friend and aim to get fitter together?

‘I don’t have time’

If time is an issue, aim to get up 45 minutes earlier, go for a walk at lunchtime - or check out Helen’s ideas for exercises you can do at home or work, in short bursts throughout the day.

‘I’ve failed before’

You’re only human! We all have good days and bad days when it comes to our overall health and fitness. So, if you fancy some chocolate, have some – just aim to have a couple of squares rather than the whole bar. It’s all about balance.

Fashionista: You know what I fancy? Belly dancing classes… anyone care to join me?

Foodie: Ah! If only you lived a bit closer. I wouldn’t mind a bit of that. Maybe I’ll see if they have any classes near me…

Fashionista: Do it! Then we can have a dance-off next time we all get together.
