Fitness Fan on… Exercising your imagination

For some, gym-time is essential me-time. But if you can’t afford this luxury, there are ways of building exercise into your daily routine* – you just need to think creatively…

It’s not a water bottle; it’s a free weight

Fill a water bottle and use it as a weight to tone your arms. Try bicep curls – hold the bottle out and curl it towards your shoulder before slowly lowering. Repeat 20 times on each side.

It’s not a rug; it’s a Pilates mat

Whilst watching TV, lie on your side with your legs extended and the top leg slightly in front. Rotate your leg as if drawing circles in the air. Repeat 12 times then move your top leg slightly behind the bottom leg and reverse the circles. Then swap sides and repeat with your other leg.

It’s not a desk; it’s a work out station

When sitting at your desk, try sucking in your stomach to strengthen core muscles (imagine trying to make your belly button meet your spine…). Intensify the effect by lifting your legs from the floor, holding for five seconds then gently lowering.

Mrs Motivation: I’ve started to do the ‘TV Pilates’ – can feel it working already!

Foodie: I’ve started dancing sessions in the living room with the kids at night – lots of fun, makes you feel good - and the kids go straight to bed after!
