Fitness Fan on… Setting a healthy example

Latest government advice says that adults should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days a week to enjoy the health benefits of exercise – so here are some ideas to get you going.

A few simple steps* could help you and your family turn up your activity levels and enjoy the benefits of feeling fitter:

  • If you live within walking distance of two parks, go to the one that’s further away. The same applies to pubs…
  • Go on a family bike ride
  • Get into the pool (not the cafe) when you take the kids swimming – lengths are better than lattes, although a latte makes a great post-swim reward
  • Buy a hula hoop for yourself as well as your children
  • Put on some music and dance around until you’re out of breath; great for just before bedtime. Although you may collapse into bed before the children…
  • Join in a game of football – or even sign up as a referee…
  • Make an assault course in the garden
  • Try getting round your living room without touching the floor
  • Have a game of Twister
  • Hold a duvet changing race…
  • Go out dancing - or get a dance mat

Children learn from watching what their parents do, so if you get active you’ll be setting a great example – and the benefits could last a lifetime.
